We like all types of cenotes, but we have to admit that cave cenotes are more impressive in many cases.

1- CENOTE X’KEKÉN

Cenote X’keken was one of the first tourist cenotes to open in the Valladolid area many years ago. Its stalactites are breathtaking. It is managed by locals from the town of Dzitnup.

The Xkeken cenote, along with the Samulá cenote, is part of what is known as X’kekén Park. They are located just 7 kilometers from Valladolid and offer various activities. It is also known as the Dzitnup cenotes.

What to Know About Cenote X’kekén

  • X’KEKÉN CENOTE ENTRANCE FEES: $226 MXN for adults / $200 MXN for children. Valladolid residents with ID: $125 MXN. The price includes admission to both cenotes and a life jacket.
  • FACILITIES: In addition to offering guided tours of the two cenotes, Xkeken Park offers ATV tours, private ceremonies, a buffet restaurant, and a relaxation area with hammocks. There are restrooms, changing rooms, showers, life jacket rentals, and a souvenir shop.
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: X’kekén means pig in Mayan. The name comes from the story of its discovery: a farmer, chasing one of his pigs, saw it go into a hole. This hole led to the water of this beautiful cenote.
  • FEATURES OF CENOTE X’KEKÉN: It’s a cave cenote with a small opening of light, hanging roots, and impressive stalactites.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: You descend a comfortable set of stone steps to reach a wooden platform facing the cenote’s water.
  • WHAT WE LIKE MOST: The stalactite formations.
  • WHAT WE LIKE LEAST: We’re a bit picky sometimes, but we really don’t like colored lights in cenotes. It ruins the natural charm too much.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: This cenote is visited by tour agencies, so if you go early, you’ll avoid the crowds. You can enjoy the cenote almost alone if you go very early. Visit X’Kekén first, and then Samulá to see how the fabulous beam of light enters. It’s worth the wait.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: The cenote is quite dark, so it’s best to use a tripod to shoot at a slow shutter speed and capture the place’s depth with a closed aperture (like f/16/22/32) for complete sharpness. You can keep the ISO low to avoid noise. Be careful; anyone walking on the wooden walkway will cause the tripod to move.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: The cenote is beautiful. For us, the fact that we had to enter with a guide (who is good and definitely contributes to the visit) and the cenote’s surroundings didn’t appeal. We much prefer cenotes in a more natural and less touristy setting.

How to get to Cenote X’Kekén

Cenote X’Kekén is located 7 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, in a town called Dzitnup. It’s so easy to get there.

  • BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Take a colectivo (shared van) on Calle 44, leaving from Parque Central towards the ADO Bus Station. It costs about 50 pesos per person.
  • BY TAXI – A taxi will cost around 150 pesos. The cenote is the ideal distance to reach by motorbike or bicycle. You can easily rent them in Valladolid.

2- CENOTE SAMULÁ

The Samulá cenote is one of Valladolid’s most iconic cenotes. It’s a spectacular cenote with a skylight through which the roots and rays of natural light descend to the crystal-clear water. It is managed by locals from the town of Dzitnup.

The Samulá cenote, along with the Xkekén cenote, are part of what is known as X’kekén Park. They are located just 7 kilometers from Valladolid and offer various activities. It is also known as the Dzitnup cenotes.

What to Know About Cenote Samulá

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE SAMULÁ: $226 MXN for adults / $200 MXN for children. Valladolid residents with ID: $125 MXN. The price includes admission to both cenotes and a life jacket.

  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: A safe and comfortable wooden staircase descends to the crystal-clear water. You go down about 20 meters.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The cenote itself is one of the iconic images of Yucatán; it is very beautiful.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: The fact that a guide accompanies you is not something that particularly motivates us.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: This cenote is visited by tour agencies, so if you go early, you’ll avoid the crowds. You can enjoy the cenote almost alone if you go very early. Visit X’Kekén first, and then Samulá to see how the fabulous beam of light enters. It’s worth the wait.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: The best option is to use a wide-angle lens; 24 to 14 mm is ideal. If you visit the cenote on a sunny day, you can enjoy photographing the beam of sunlight illuminating it—it’s beautiful. I recommend using a tripod. Be careful; anyone walking on the wooden walkway will cause the tripod to move.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: Samulá is a very photogenic cenote, and we already know that places where you can take a postcard-perfect photo have added value for many.

How to get to Cenote Samulá

Cenote Samulá is located 7 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, in a town called Dzitnup. It`s so easy to get there.

  • GETTING TO CENOTE SAMULÁ BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Take a colectivo (shared van) on Calle 44, leaving from Parque Central towards the ADO Bus Station. It costs about 50 pesos per person.

3- CENOTE TOH

This cave cenote is the least known of those near Valladolid. The descent to the water via an 18-meter iron ladder is truly impressive. The cenote is managed by a Mayan-speaking family.

What to Know About Cenote Toh

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE TOH: 150 pesos per person
  • FACILITIES: Rustic restrooms and showers. Life jackets are available.
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: The Toh is one of the most prized and well-known birds in the Yucatan Peninsula, also popularly known as the clock bird. In this cenote, you can see the Toh bird. In fact, it’s a popular bird in cenotes. April is the easiest time to see them, as it’s the end of the dry season and more of them arrive at the cenotes.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE TOH: It’s a cave cenote with a large, wide cavity. The cavity and the descent are the most impressive features.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: The descent is 18 meters down a sturdy iron ladder, but it is a steep drop. This cenote isn’t for everyone; some people may feel uncomfortable going down the ladder. Be careful not to slip; the steps don’t have non-slip grips.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The descent into this cenote is impressive; the cavern is very spacious.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: The water isn’t very clear, it’s stagnant.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: It’s one of the least visited cenotes in Valladolid. The facilities are rather basic.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: Use a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the place; your photo will look better😎 Around 11 o’clock, the beam of light enters through the opening.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: It’s not our preferred style of cenote; we don’t like the use of materials like cement and iron in natural spaces. We believe that for many people it would be too rustic. We have nice memories of the day we visited, though, and we loved spending time with the family who manages it.

How to get to Cenote Toh

Cenote Toh is located 5 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, a 10-minute drive. It’s near the unique Hotel Vocho.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE TOH BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: There is no public transport to Cenote Toh. You can go by bike, motorbike, on foot, or by taxi. There are several options in Valladolid for renting bikes and motorbike.

4- CENOTE SUYTUN

Suytun is one of the most famous cenotes in all of Yucatán, one of the most talked about and visited. The most viral photos of cenotes are those taken on the famous platform of the Suytun cenote. We know the power of images, how much they influence people.

What to Know About Cenote Suytun

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE SUYTUN: Adults 200 pesos per person / Children 5 to 11 years old 150 pesos. The price includes a life jacket. Open every day from 9 am to 5 pm; last entry at 4 pm.
  • FACILITIES: all the basic facilities like showers, restrooms… Private events can be held inside the cenote, lasting 60 minutes. Available times: 7:00 AM, 8:00 AM, and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.   • ABOUT ITS NAME: The word Suytun comes from the Mayan language and means “stone center” or “central stone”.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE SUYTUN: The cenote boasts one of the most beautiful and photographed vaults on the entire Yucatán Peninsula. The platform above the cenote’s water is the ideal spot to capture that iconic photo so many seek. As it is a very popular cenote, the maximum capacity is 150 people. During peak season, to ensure everyone can enjoy themselves to the fullest, a 2-hour limit per visit is set for each cenote. The water level, like sea level, fluctuates due to environmental factors such as weather, rainfall, and hurricanes. There is no “normal” level in the cenote. Sometimes the platform may be submerged, and at other times it may be fully visible. These changes are natural and unpredictable. There is another cenote you can visit in the area; it’s called Cenote Suytun Kaapeh.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: The entrance to the cenote is via easy and comfortable steps carved into the rock. As you descend, you’ll notice the change in temperature and humidity, as is typical in all cave cenotes. The cenote is illuminated with artificial lights.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: It’s an impressive cave, and from a photography standpoint, it’s very appealing because of how striking it is. You can take some really beautiful photos of the place to share on social media.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: The fact that it’s such a touristy cenote makes us reluctant to go there. Luckily, we discovered it many, many years ago, when hardly anyone visited cenotes.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: The best way to enjoy it in a different way is to stay overnight in the cabins, which include admission to the cenote. It completely changed the experience for us.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: To take a photo on the walkway above the cenote, it’s best to go on a sunny day. Natural light enters the cenote’s cavern between noon and 2 p.m.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: For those who like to take photos or have their picture taken, this is an ideal cenote; you’ll enjoy it. If you know us, it’s easy to see that Cenote Suytun isn’t one of our favorites, as it’s very touristy. We love enjoying cenotes with fewer people, and we prefer them to be preserved in their most natural state

How to get to Cenote Suytun

Cenote Suytun is located 8,5 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, a 12-minute drive. There are several options in Valladolid for renting motorbike . And of course, you can get there in a private taxi or tour.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE SUYTUN BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: From Valladolid, shared taxis depart for Chemax (between 41st and 38th streets). You can get off the shared taxi near the cenote entrance. To return to Valladolid, you’ll need patience and have to wait on the highway for a combi or taxi heading back (the return trip is always more difficult as they tend to be full halfway through).

5- CENOTE XUX-HÁ

Cenote Xux Há is one of our favorite cave cenotes near Valladolid. The cenote’s cavern is truly impressive, and the site, managed by local Maya community members, does a fantastic job.

What to Know About Cenote Xux-há

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE XUX-HÁ: 150 pesos per person. Life Jacket rental (25 MXN). Lockers (25 MXN).
  • FACILITIES: Rustic yet nice restrooms and showers (always remember to shower before swimming in the cenote). Life jackets are available. A little shop selling sodas and junk food
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: Xux (pronounced shush) is honeycomb, and Ha is water. Ha is a word you’ll see a lot in these lands, and it always indicates that there is water.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE XUX-HÁ: It is a cavern cenote with a large diameter, very impressive. A wooden platform leads you into the water. The cavity and the descent are the most impressive features. The detachment in the vault allows natural light to enter.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: You’ll begin descending a comfortable stone staircase, continuing down a well-made wooden staircase. It’s a descent of about 25 meters. There’s a wooden platform to access the cenote. On one of the cenote walls, there’s a small wooden platform from which you can jump into the water. Great fun!
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The impressive descent down the 25-meter staircase is awesome!
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: We didn’t find anything that we didn’t like.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: It’s one of the least visited cenotes in Valladolid.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: The cenote is dark, so it’s best to use a tripod to shoot at a slow shutter speed and capture the place’s depth with a closed aperture (like f/16/22/32) for complete sharpness. You can keep the ISO low to avoid noise. Be careful; anyone walking on the wooden walkway will cause the tripod to move. It is advisable to visit the place during peak sun hours, from 11 to 3, depending on the time of year.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: It’s one of our favorite types of cenotes, due to a number of features we greatly value: it’s naturally lit, the materials used for access to the cenote are wood and stone (which aren’t so intrusive in natural spaces), it’s managed by a Mayan community, it’s not as well-known as other cenotes around Valladolid, the facilities are well-maintained, you’re required to shower before entering the cenote, and besides, the cenote cavity is simply breathtaking.

Cenote Xux-Há is located 23 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, a 20-minute drive. There are several options in Valladolid for renting motorbike . And of course, you can get there in a private taxi or tour.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE XUX-HÁ BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: From Valladolid, shared taxis depart for Chemax (between 41st and 38th streets). You can get off the shared taxi near the cenote entrance. 6- CENOTE CHUKUM

We came across another of the most beautiful cave cenotes in the Valladolid area. The cavern and its crystal-clear waters captivate any beauty lover.

Cenote Chukum has always impressed us. It’s managed by the Mayan Adventures tour agency. They bring tourists daily from the Riviera Maya to this cenote. The facilities are very well maintained and staffed; they do a great job.

What to Know About Cenote Chukum

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE CHUKUM: Have 2 different access passes. The «Day pass» includes Access to the Cenote, Parking, Life Jackets and Lockers. Adults: 350 pesos per person / Children 5 to 11 years old: 250 pesos. (National 250/ 150 pesos). The «Full Day Pass» includes all the stuff before + Buffet with Regional Food. Adults: 550 pesos per person / Children 5 to 11 years old: 350 pesos. (National 350/ 250 pesos).
  • FACILITIES: Bathrooms, showers, life jackets, lockers and restaurant. It has a zip line.
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: Chukum is a type of endemic tree found in the area surrounding this cenote. The resin of the chukum tree is used to make a type of stucco or natural coating that has been used since ancient Mayan times.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE CHUKUM: Cenote Chukum is a cave cenote, with natural light filtering through an opening in the ceiling. The impressive cenote is approximately 40 meters in diameter, and its crystal-clear waters allow you to see the sunlight reaching all the way to the bottom—a truly beautiful sight. There is also artificial lighting inside the cave, but it is kept quite dim, allowing the natural light to stand out.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: Stone steps provide easy access to the cenote’s interior, where various wooden platforms allow you to walk around it. The non-slip flooring is very useful.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The cenote itself is spectacular. The facilities are very well maintained; it’s a lovely place to spend the day. It has several points from which to jump into the water, in addition to the zip line.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: At certain times of the day, it can be full of tourists who come from Riviera Maya.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: If you go early in the morning, it’s probably one of the cenotes you’ll be able to enjoy in solitude.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: If you have an underwater camera, you can take some great photos by taking advantage of the clarity of the water and the rays of natural light that penetrate through the water.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: We really like both the cenote and the facilities. Despite being artificially lit, they’ve managed to enhance the cenote’s natural beauty.

How to get to Cenote Chukum

Cenote Chukum is located 16 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, a 22-minute drive. There are several motorbike rental options in Valladolid; it’s a good way to visit the area’s cenotes. And of course, you can get there in a private taxi or tour.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE CHUKUM BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Cenote Chukum is on the road to Yalcobá, so you’ll need to take a shared taxi on the Valladolid-Yalcobá route. They depart from Calle 41 between Calle 34 and 32. Shared taxis can carry up to four people and leave when they’re full. You can get off in front of the entrance to Cenote Chukum. The return trip is more complicated, as the taxis will be full on their way back to Valladolid.

7- CENOTE XUUX PEEK

Cenote Xuux Peek is located within the grounds of the Hotel Xuux Peek, part of the Tecnohotel chain. You can stay at the hotel or purchase a Day Pass to explore its two cenotes and sinkholes, hike or bike along its 3 kilometers of trails, and enjoy the pool and natural pools.

A unique place to discover cenotes near Valladolid. You’ll be amazed.

What to Know About Cenote Xuux Peek

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE XUUX PEEK: If you stay at the hotel, the cenote is free, and you can also enjoy the use of the rest of the facilities. We absolutely love this little hidden gem. Day Pass is 250 pesos per person, children under 10 years old 150 pesos.
  • FACILITIES: Bathrooms and showers in the pool area. The restaurant only serves breakfast to hotel guests.
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: In Mayan, it means Dog (Peek) – Smart (Xuux).
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE XUUX PEEK: Cenote Xuux Peek is a cave cenote, a very special and beautiful place. Its large diameter allows you to explore this cave with water flowing through it, and admire its stalactites, columns, and stalagmites. Swimming is not permitted in this cenote; there is a lot of sediment, and the water quickly becomes cloudy when disturbed. It is a cenote meant for pure contemplation.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: A comfortable wooden staircase allows you to descend about 12 meters to the cavern.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: Walking around and simply being inside this beautiful cave is a luxury. Based on the cave paintings and the ancient remains they have found, it is most likely that we are in a sacred cenote of the ancient Maya.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: They have speakers playing ancient-style music. We prefer the natural sounds of nature in these natural spaces. For us, the human intervention is too visible; it makes the place feel less natural.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: Thanks to our enthusiasm for the place, they took us for a ride in the small boat you see inside the cenote. Only in this way can you discover the impressive cave paintings hidden within this cenote.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: The cenote is illuminated with artificial light, but it’s dim and not too distracting when taking photos. There are many spots to photograph in this cavern. A 24-14mm wide-angle lens will be very helpful.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: The hotel is one of our favorite secret spots to disconnect for a few days. We’ve stayed at the hotel several times; it’s an excellent place to enjoy the peace and quiet and nature. We use it as a base camp to explore the surrounding area—there are many cenotes nearby. We prefer staying here and enjoying the natural surroundings, rather than just coming to spend the day.

How to get to Cenote Xuux Peek

Hotel Xuux Peek is located 21 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, a 25-minute drive. There are several options in Valladolid for motorbike rental, it’s a good option for visiting cenotes in the area. And of course, you can get it in a private taxi or tour.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE XUUX PEEK BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Xuux Peek is on the road to Yalcobá, so you’ll need to take a shared taxi on the Valladolid-Yalcobá route. They depart from Calle 41 between Calle 34 and 32. Shared taxis can carry up to four people and leave when they’re full. It’s not easy to get there by public transport, because the entrance to the Xuux Peek Hotel is about 2 kilometers from where the main road passes. The return trip is more complicated, as the taxis will be full on their way back to Valladolid.

8- CENOTE XCANAHALTUN

The first view of Cenote Xcanahaltun descending the 6-meter stairs is breathtaking, as you feel you are facing a very special cenote. A natural space with a colossal diameter and a partially collapsed dome over the waters of the cenote.

It is undoubtedly one of our favorite cenotes in the entire Yucatan Peninsula. We have a very good relationship with the Mayan family that manages the cenote.

What to Know About Cenote Xcanahaltun

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE XCANAHALTUN: 250 pesos per person, children 220 pesos.
  • FACILITIES: Lockers, changing rooms, restrooms, and a rest area are available. Life jackets 30 pesos, rent Kayak 100 pesos. You can request permission to camp in the area; there’s a fee, but we don’t remember the exact amount. We camped there once, and it was simply wonderful. They offer a restaurant and accommodation.
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: its name means cascading water.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE XCANAHALTUN: It’s a cave cenote with a gap in the ceiling through which rays of light pass. Its immense diameter makes the place colossal. The descent into the cenote is truly breathtaking.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: A narrow spiral staircase leads down to a first platform where you’ll be greeted by a breathtaking view of the cenote. Once inside the cavern, a comfortable wooden staircase descends to the water below. It’s truly impressive.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: We’ve enjoyed Xcanahaltun dozens of times, and it always warms our hearts. The descent and the impression of the place is still a “Wow.”
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: nothing worth mentioning
  • A LITTLE SECRET: Cenotes managed by Mayan families sometimes don’t receive as much tourism because they don’t know how to promote themselves as effectively as those managed by companies, which are more familiar with marketing techniques. They’re no less beautiful, just less visited 😊Cross to the other side of the cenote, the views from there completely complement the place. Don’t leave without doing it
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: A wide-angle lens between 24 and 14 mm is very helpful in almost all cenotes to capture the fullness. There’s an iconic photo right in the center of the cenote, where your feet touch the bottom, and the ray of natural light reaches you.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: Without a doubt, one of our favorite cenotes. We’ve visited it dozens of times, alone and with friends, and it always impresses us. They’ve managed to preserve the natural beauty of the place, which is simply stunning.

How to get to Cenote Xcanahaltun

The Xcanahaltun cenote is located in the municipality of Yalcobá, just 30 kilometers from Valladolid. It’s a 30-minute drive. Scooter rentals are available in Valladolid, which is a good way to explore the area around the city.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE XCANAHALTUN BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Xcanahaltun is near to Yalcobá, so you’ll need to take a shared taxi on the Valladolid-Yalcobá route. Cenote Zazil Tunich offers a unique experience for visitors. The cenote tour is in small groups with a guide. The cavern is truly magnificent and well worth seeing. And while we’re not usually fans of this tour style, they do a fantastic job. They operate the cenote as if it were a museum; that’s their vision.

We were always a bit hesitant to visit this cenote, and it surprised us. Our curiosity knows no bounds, and our desire to explore cenotes motivates us to discover them all! 🩵

What to Know About Cenote Zazil Tunich

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE ZAZIL TUNICH: 400 pesos per person. They offer various experiences at the Zazil Tunich cenote. The cenote opens at 11 am. Guided tours to enjoy the full experience as a Cenote Museum are at 3 pm, 5 pm and 7 pm. The price is the same.
  • FACILITIES: Showers, restrooms, lockers, and parking. There are several small craft shops at the entrance. Cenote Zazil Tunich offers weddings, Mayan ceremonies, venue rentals, marriage proposals, and dinners. The place is truly unique for these types of events, and everything is spectacularly organized.

  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE ZAZIL TUNICH: It’s a cavern cenote, artificially illuminated with soft lights that highlight certain parts of the cenote. The cavern is a truly beautiful space, with columns, stalactites, stalagmites, and crystal-clear water… what a sight! And of course you’ll have time to swim during the visit.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: Access to the cenote is very easy, via stone steps and wooden walkways where necessary. Everything is very well maintained, and the facilities are excellent. You can go with children; it’s very easy.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The cenote’s beauty captivated us. We’re not usually fans of cenotes so heavily modified for human comfort, but they’ve done a good job, preserving much of the natural beauty of the place. The lighting is also very well done.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: That’s precisely what we like least, the modification that makes it look like a natural showcase.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: We visited the cenote on our own. The entrance fee is the same, but you can go without a guide so you don’t have to worry about the pace of a guided tour.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: We recommend using a tripod and a 24-14mm wide-angle lens. The cenote’s good lighting greatly enhances the view.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: While it wasn’t really our style, we loved the place and what they offer. It’s been one of the leading cenotes in the Valladolid area for many years.

  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: You go down to the interior via comfortable carved stone stairs. It is ao easy the acces.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The cave itself is beautiful, and we love the access to the cenote from different points and with viewpoints.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: Tours arrive from Valladolid and Riviera Maya; sometimes they are very crowded.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: They aren’t as popular as other cenotes around Valladolid. If you’re lucky, you might have both cenotes to yourself. Go early for a better chance of enjoying them without the crowds.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: We recommend using a tripod for cave cenotes due to the low light; this will allow you to shoot at a slower shutter speed and use a larger aperture for greater depth of field.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: We love the cenote itself and the facilities. It’s one of those cenotes where sometimes it’s crowded, and other times you’re all alone. You just have to know when to go 😊

  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE AGUA DULCE: This cenote is one of the largest cave-type cenotes you’ll find around Valladolid: 80 meters wide and 15 meters deep. Colossal.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: A comfortable stone staircase leads down to the cenote’s water. Very convenient and easy.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The Agua Dulce cenote cavity is colossal; the stalactites and its walls are magnificent.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: Tours arrive from Valladolid and Riviera Maya; sometimes they are very crowded.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: The Agua Dulce cenote is less visited than Palomitas. The Agua Dulce cavern is darker and less illuminated. Although the water is crystal clear, the lack of light makes it appear dark. I’ve seen several people who are a little afraid to swim because of this.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: We recommend using a tripod for cave cenotes due to the low light; this will allow you to shoot at a slower shutter speed and use a larger aperture for greater depth of field.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: At the cave level, it’s truly impressive for us. Seeing how the natural light filters through the natural openings in the vault is wonderful. Some people find the place’s darkness a little frightening.

  • A LITTLE SECRET: Allow approximately 2-3 hours for your visit. We are located in one of those cenotes where you can enjoy various services. 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM: Best chance of a calm swim. Late morning and early afternoon: Highest chance of seeing direct sunlight from above. After 3:00 PM: Sometimes calmer, but with less time before closing.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: For the best photos with the natural light, visit the cenote between 11 am and 2 pm. The natural light varies depending on the time of year.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: Due to its characteristics, it’s not our favorite type of cenote to visit. But the important thing is that you choose according to your preferences using the information we provide. Many people love it.

How to get to Cenote Hubiku

Cenote Hubiku is located in Temozón, on the road from Valladolid, just outside the town. It is well signposted. It is 17 kilometers from the center of Valladolid, an 18-minute drive. Scooter rentals are available in Valladolid, which is a good way to explore the area around the city.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE HUBIKU BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: 40th Street, between 35th and 37th Streets, Centro. They have taxis (4-passenger cars) and vans. They leave when they’re full. They’ll drop you off in Temozón; from there it’s a couple of kilometers to the Hubiku cenote. It’s actually easier to go in your own transport, by private taxi or on a private tour.

13- CENOTE FANTASMA

For curious people like us, it’s hard to miss the Cenote Fantasma sign on the road between Cancún and Valladolid. If you enjoy exploring, we highly recommend avoiding the highway; the best part is on the other road: there are several cenotes to discover.

We’ve practically watched Cenote Fantasma grow. It’s managed by the local Mayan community, and the project has a lot of heart.

What to Know About Cenote Fantasma

  • ABOUT ITS NAME: Its name comes from the disappearance of an old camp near the cenote, which was swallowed up by the jungle, becoming a “Ghost Town”.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE FANTASMA: The imposing vault is filled with stalactite and stalagmite formations where swallows and bats nest. A large rock has broken off from the ceiling; it’s simply magnificent.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: Comfortable and easy wooden stairs provide access to this spectacular cenote. We really like the access.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: We are always thrilled to swim in crystal-clear waters under such beautiful domes, what a luxury 🩵
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: nothing that comes to mind right away
  • A LITTLE SECRET: There’s no good internet signal, so it’s an ideal place to disconnect and sleep in nature, with a cenote almost all to yourself. We haven’t stayed overnight yet, but we definitely will 😊💚

Cenote Fantasma is located approximately 50 minutes from Valladolid (50 km) and about 2 hours from Cancun.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE FANTASMA BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: There is no public transport directly to Cenote Fantasma from Valladolid or Cancún; it is a little bit complicated to arrive there. There are several options in Valladolid for renting motorbikes.

14- CENOTE CHOJ HA

Cenote Choj Há is often described as the Sistine Chapel of Valladolid’s cave cenotes, and it’s easy to see why. Its enormous cavern is filled with spectacular stalactites, stalagmites, and towering limestone columns, creating an almost otherworldly landscape. Stepping inside feels like entering another planet.

The vast cavern also has a dry section, adding another fascinating dimension to the experience.

What to Know About Cenote Choj Ha

  • ENTRY FEES CENOTE CHOJ HA: 150 pesos per person. Children under 5 years old enter free. Life jackets and snorkeling equipment can be rented for 30 pesos.
  • FACILITIES: There are bathrooms, changing tables and showers; the facilities are rustic.
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: Translated from the Mayan language, it means “falling drop of water”.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE CHOJ HA: It’s a large cavern, partly filled with water and partly dry. The sheer size of the place allows you to feel the vastness of the underground, the grandeur of nature and the passage of time. Caves are our wrinkles in history.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: Behind a small entrance, you can’t imagine what lies within. After your eyes adjust to the darkness, you can begin to enjoy this extraordinary cavern. Comfortable, hand-carved stairs lead you down to the water.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The beauty of the place, its stone formations, colors, sounds… this cenote is a temple of nature to admire. The crystal-clear water is yet another of its attractions.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: The facilities might seem too rustic to some people. We think they’re fine.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: Being far from Valladolid, it’s isolated between Valladolid and Cancún, which means it’s not very crowded. If you get up early and arrive by 9, you’ll most likely enjoy it all to yourself.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: There are some very beautiful places where it’s more difficult to take a good photo if you’re a photography enthusiast: Cenote Choj Há is one of them. We recommend going with a tripod because the place is dark, and you’ll need a long exposure time. Artificial lights make it harder to get a good shot.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: We have a special connection with this cenote and its people. We’ve known them for many years, watched them grow, and admire their hard work. We’ve visited the cenote dozens of times and always recommend it.

The Choj Há cenote is located in X-Can: from Valladolid, it’s about a 50-minute drive. From Cancún, it’s 1 hour and 40 minutes. You must take the free road, not the toll road.

  • HOW TO GET TO CENOTE CHOJ HA BY PUBLIC TRANSPORT: It’s difficult to get there by public transport, especially to return to Valladolid. You’ll need to take two consecutive shared taxis. The first one takes you to Chemax (it leaves from Calle 41 in Valladolid), and the second one leaves Chemax for X-Can. Ask the driver to let you off at the cenote entrance, and from there it’s about a 400-meter walk to the cenote along a dirt path.

15- CENOTE NOHOCH ACTUN

Cenote Nohoch Actun is a stunning cave cenote with a breathtaking 18-meter drop. It’s located near the town of X-Can and is adjacent to Cenote Choj Há. We recommend visiting both places—don’t miss out on the amazing sights! 😊🩵

Nohoch Actun offers visits to both the cenote and a cave. Both are sure to surprise and delight any nature lover. The subsoil of the Yucatán Peninsula holds many treasures.

What to Know About Cenote Nohoch AcTun

  • ENTRANCE FEES CENOTE NOHOCH ACTUN: Entrance to the cenote is 150 pesos per person. The cave visit is also 150 pesos per person. An additional 100 MXN is charged if you rappel into the cenote.
  • FACILITIES: There are no facilities. They have the rappelling equipment.
  • ABOUT ITS NAME: Nohoch Actun means “large grotto” or “large cave” in the Mayan language. The word nohoch translates as large or enormous, and actun or aktun means cave or grotto.
  • CHARACTERISTICS OF CENOTE NOHOCH ACTUN: The cenote has a small opening in the ceiling, through which natural light enters. In the middle of the cenote, there is a platform from which you can access the crystal-clear water.
  • ACCESS TO THE CENOTE: You descend via a sturdy iron ladder; the descent is somewhat dizzying. For added safety, you will need a harness. The cenote staff will be available to assist you at all times.
  • WHAT WE LIKED MOST: The descent is spectacular; you enter the underworld slowly and gently, and we loved that.
  • WHAT WE LIKED LEAST: Similarly, descending the 18-meter iron ladder isn’t for everyone. They still haven’t installed showers where you can wash off the chemicals from your body before going down into the cenote, so as not to contaminate the water.
  • A LITTLE SECRET: If there aren’t many other people in the cenote, ask them to turn on the lights once you’re inside. Your eyes will adjust to the darkness, and you can enjoy the cenote in its natural light. Then they can turn on the artificial lights.
  • PHOTOGRAPHY TIP: We took better photos without the artificial lights. To do this, you’ll need a tripod and to shoot at long shutter speeds of up to 30 seconds.
  • PERSONAL OPINION: This cenote is unique because of its descent, which means it’s not for everyone. The descent itself is safe, so there’s no problem there. It surprises many people and adds to the adventure.

  • What to Bring: Pack your swimsuit, a towel, and eco-friendly insect repellent — applied only after you leave the water. Sunscreen is the same: wear it outside only, never before swimming. A snorkel mask is worth throwing in the bag for certain cenotes. Dress lightly but wear closed, comfortable shoes to ward off insects.
  • Opening hours: Most cenotes open between 8 and 9 AM and close at 5 to 6 PM, every day.
  • Entrance costs: Typically range from 100 to 300 pesos for basic entry, with higher fees for additional activities. In most cenotes, you must pay in cash.
